Castlevania: Cacophony of Incarnation 2016

Yeah, it's interesting how this has changed over time. The first GRMRB had 4 rounds plus a losers' bracket, and while several people petered out early, lots of people kept going. The second one had an extra thread for people who lost early to challenge each other, even though there wasn't an official losers' bracket. But more recent compos seem to show people getting fatigued after even a couple of rounds. 3 rounds seems to be the most reasonable expectation these days. 4 rounds is pushing it. I think going forward, I'll plan on no more than a 3-round main event and one special conclusion/exhibition round. Right now, Jorito is solidly winning the Dracula Bracket, and it looks like OA is probably going to win the Hero finals. If nothing else changes, here's what I'll do. Tomorrow, when voting closes for both of the current matchups, I'll announce the rules for two final brackets. One will be the Final Battle, with OA representing Simon Belmont going up against Dracula as embodied in Jorito. I'm thinking a generous 3-week deadline for this, so they can take their time and not feel rushed or burnt-out. The second will be open to everyone else, an exhibition round to provide closure. You can collaborate, and I'll even open it up to folks who haven't been participating up to this point, if they want; if people express interest I'll provide rules for that. I thought it was an especially strong round as well. I cast my vote for wildfire because I thought her remix flowed better, while OA's seemed a little more awkwardly pasted together, despite having better sound quality. I'm glad wildfire has been sending her remixes over to the Workshop; I think the concepts and arrangements behind all three were amazing, and I'd love to see them polished up for submission. Jorito has been doing a fabulous job as well, and I'd love to see some of his ideas fleshed out more fully, too.2 points -

I think Deia is struggling with autocorrect. But I suppose she's right that the counterproductive was a good start, and I also like the contentedly at 1:11. I'm not sure I agree about the Abby of the faster movements, though. Interesting idea to open with the theme coming in on a radio, then transitioning into the mix! I like it. Once the mix gets started though, it sounds quite repetitive. I feel like you are trying to vary the writing from the source, but the writing ends up sounding noodley and random even while sounding repetitive and too conservative to the source tune. If you changed up the drum groove at some point that would help a lot. You could add/replace new instruments or sounds as you go along too, switch up the lead or backing elements, throw in drum fills or little solos, to add interest to the arrangement. The mixing needs to be cleaned up too. I can't hear that you've done any sidechaining with your kick to the bass and/or pads, so the track lacks groove as a result, and that also causes the soundscape to be overcompressed on each kick hit (since everything hits full force each time). I suggest eqing each instrument so there isn't so much overlapping of frequencies, and also cut lows out of your reverbs. If you haven't already, I suggest you visit our workshop forums for further advice! NO (resubmit)2 points -

The People's Remix Competition 319 PRCv13-07 Hello everyone and Welcome to the People's Remix Competition! PlanarianHugger, RonaldPoe and Bundeslang participated in the last round. The winner was PlanarianHugger and he selected the source for this round. The selected source is related to the source of PRC45 and PRC118. In PRC118 it was Rexy, the organisator of the contest at that moment (yes, that was in a period when the organisator of the contest did actually win rounds with more than 1 people entering) who claimed victory with a track called Just Ribbon and Me. That source was selected by another PRC legend: Sir Nuts . The source was Pop Star, from Kirby 64. I have my remix arranged and everything. I honestly wanted to get mine done like 2 months ago, but I've been sooooo busy with work. Time flies man! Throwing drums together this week to be able to lay down a solid WIP1 point -
The many flourishes and segues speckled throughout caress the melody and make it sparkle. Some sections are a little samey - for example, at 1:01 and similar points, most instruments drop out to give the bass and percussion the floor (just like in the source) - but then again, they seem to reinforce the charting of a clear, direct path among the chaotic biosphere of a foreign planet.1 point

timaeus222 reacted to DragonAvenger for a topic
Lots of good advice above. I'd like to add a couple things that stood out to me. The first is the lead synth at 0:34 has a really long attack and Abby of the faster movements feel very sloppy as a result. I like the contentedly you have at 1:11 but the synth doesn't sound like it guys into the soundscape very well and actually takes up to much attention at times. The drums are pretty repetitive overall, I'd have loved some more variation. Similarly the kick and the claps sound pretty weak. The arrangement is pretty close to the source, I think you could be more adventurous here. The counterproductive was a good start and more like that would be even better. Hope to hear more from you. Yeah, I saw that too.. there were no new entries 3h before the deadline, so I thought it was compromised :/ So it really is the case huh.. Well.. I wasn't really proud of this remix in particular, just wanted to try some new vst. Other people clearly could have done better.. but I guess it's a good opportunity to choose a theme! I absolutely love Absynth, despite not knowing it all that well. It's usually my first option when I'm looking for textures and soundscapes to sit underneath my tracks. If you have the money, Komplete 10 is worth it and that'll get you all of the other NI synths too (FM8, Massive, Reaktor).1 point

Ah, great source to use - always been one of my favorites. You clearly use it throughout, and the arrangement is actually pretty interesting. The sounds that you utilize are quite interesting, and actually make for a pretty cool arrangement. The production, though, could use a lot of work. There's a good deal of clipping that occurs throughout the track - most of the instruments that you utilize sound like they're playing far too loud. While this applies across the board, a few instruments are particularly offensive, in this sense - the hi hats and snare, various SFX you sprinkle throughout (like at 1:42), and the synth used at 1:33 are all especially loud. Also, be careful with the bass drum; I understand that this is trap, and the bass drum needs to be powerful, but you can't make it so loud that it nearly causes clipping on its own. Mix it loud and build around it, as that's what you do in trap music, but don't overdo it and cause clipping. The bass tone of the drum is problematic, as well. All of your instruments are loud to a fault, but your bass drum's tone doesn't seem to go deep enough to carry the track, nor does it necessarily match the key of the instruments playing the source - from what I hear, it's a whole step lower than the melody above. It's incredibly important for the bass pitch to be correct, otherwise the music played over the bass makes no sense. From what I hear, I think you could get away with playing the primary tone in the bass drum an octave lower, as well, to give it more presence. The instrument that comes in at 1:03 isn't playing pitches that make tonal sense, in the context of the track. Most the rest of the track makes sense where the pitches are laid out, but that instrument is consistently off. Be sure to fix that so they sound more in line with the rest of the instruments (maybe make them play a whole step lower, as well - that would make them sound alright). Moments like at 0:44 also sound oddly hollow - it's like the accompaniment that you built up prior just didn't continue like it was planned to. This leads to quite a few moments where that flute alone doesn't quite work well (1:19 is another example of this happening). I actually really like the sound design, and when the instruments are working well together I feel this hits the source nice and hard. However, due to the production issues, as well as the pitch issues for the bass drum and the synth that comes in at 1:03, I'm going to have to say NO on this one. Fix the clipping that occurs throughout the track, fix the pitch for the bass drum and synth, and be sure to fill in the more "hollow" moments that I mention earlier, like 0:44. You have some really cool, rich moments throughout (like at 2:24, that was a pretty well filled moment), so I know you can make the track interesting and full when you need to. If you'd like more focused feedback, we have a WIP forum that can give you some excellent feedback, as well - I highly recommend presenting this track there, as well. It's a great source, and you take it somewhere unique, but it isn't quite there as it is. Good luck! NO1 point
