  6. Download it: http://ocremix.org/info/Heart_of_a_Gamer:_A_Tribute_to_Satoru_Iwata Torrent: http://bt.ocremix.org/torrents/Heart_of_a_Gamer_-_A_Tribute_to_Satoru_Iwata.torrent "On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer." Whether in front of a computer monitor or a boardroom of investors, Iwata's love of games were what came first. His "Ask Iwata" series combed through the histories of Nintendo games, old and new. His humor in the Nintendo Direct videos showed a side we hardly see from company presidents. His devotion to his company was never truer when, in financial trouble, he took a pay cut to make sure his employees were safe. When his colleagues were in need, he lent his time and skill to save their games. Why would he do all these things? "In my heart, I am a gamer." - Gerry Wheatley (The Damned)

  9. Just some thoughts about FFVII being multi-part. A couple of years ago, Square Enix released the MMO Final Fantasy XIV. The game tanked hard because of a myriad of technical and game design flaws. It was so bad that Square Enix pulled the game offline and reworked the entire thing. They eventually released FFXIV: A Realm Reborn, which has been a very successful game for them. A lot of the post-mortem talks about this game focused on the staff at Square Enix learning that they needed to shift the culture surrounding Final Fantasy games at the company to something that was more in tune with the player-base. SQEX has long been known as a studio that makes beautiful looking games, and that art culture was part of the reason the original FFXIV did so poorly. One example was flower pots in the game having just as many polygons as a player characters; this kind of hyper-detailed rendering of environment objects led the developers to limiting the number of visible player characters in-game, which made the game look pretty but empty, which is not what you want in an MMO. The failure of FFXIV caused the company to reevaluate their priorities, and they're much more interested in listening to the player base. The director of Final Fantasy XIV is still apologizing to players all these years later because he realized how important it was to make a player-centric game. A great example of this culture-shift is Final Fantasy XV's Episode Duscae "demo." The game isn't coming out for a while, but Square Enix has this sample game that they've released that players are playing and reacting to. The developers are using this as a kind of beta for the game in order to influence design decisions. They want to get an idea of what players want, need, and like so they can calibrate the experience of the final game accordingly. I think that this culture-shift is part of the reason they're taking a multi-part approach to Final Fantasy VII. I think they're going to release the first part, look at the feedback and player reactions, and take that on board in order to improve each new entry in the series. See what things players like, see what they don't. I think that the gameplay throughout the series of releases is going to evolve based on what players say.

  10. @Mirby & others - might require hard-clearing your cache, but the mascot now kicks in at 1600px+ resolutions... it won't appear for as many users, but it also won't obstruct navigation... full v6 design should hopefully have a better solution for this. @Slimy This feature has been reinstated, with a nice alert box message that includes a link back to the ReMix. Give it a shot @ http://ocremix.org/community/topic/39634-ocr03029-kirby-super-star-food-frenzy/ @MindWanderer First issue addressed, above. Second issue, well... apparently bbcode is still supported in some weird, strange fashion, but not really in a way that would make it particularly useful. I liked having the option, too, but it doesn't seem like it'll be coming back any time soon. However, it's all about the tradeoffs... as mentioned, CKEditor has some definite advantages, and we'll be leveraging it more in the months to come.

  11. My first thought was that "OC ReMix" was some kind of rap act, because of a song that popped up on KaZaA with OC ReMix in the title. I'm pretty sure that was a Chrono Trigger remix. Anyway. This was likely around 2002. I've mentioned the site on various Norwegian fora over the years, and bought three, black t-shirts. So is this site still run by Dr. Pepper? GZ!

  13. Very nice, even if I think the groovier approach doesn't fit too much the source. The performance is excellent once again here, and it's well-recorded and produced. The inclusion of other bits (especially Dearly Beloved) works well. Tetrimino is definitively a name to check -- they produce great arrangements and this one is no exception.

  16. I'm only focusing on software for now. I can't justify buying a bunch of hardware stuff unless/until I get a foothold of success starting out to begin with. Iris 2 looks kickass, but I'm reading that thing is so CPU intensive that it's borderline prohibitive. I think Omnisphere 2 would be better there and I want that fucker so bad I can taste it, but it's out of my current budget right now.

  18. Iris really is great for manipulating recorded audio. You really can get some crazy sounds out of it quite quickly. Otherwise, I suggest starting to build your own library of field recordings. Doing this sort of thing will give you access to unique sounds that others might not have. Another avenue to explore is to build some basic analog synth circuits and sample them. Start off by building an Atari Punk Console or any other simple project.

  20. Oh, I see. You can only indent one level at a time, and you have to have some text on each line before you can indent the next. And you can't nest a numbered list inside a bulleted list or vice-versa (you can in BBCode). Doesn't look like ordering by letter or Roman numeral are options, either, but I'll live. And I see the quote thing was due to some strange "helpful" thing it was trying to do to keep what I had typed in an incomplete post earlier. Not sure how I got an empty quote by djp in there, but it's gone now. Had to delete by clicking on the "move" icon in the top-left and then holding it down while pressing the delete key. Bizarre.

  21. Sure. Make a regular list and start tabbing. Was that what you meant? item inner item another inner item nope, not gonna stop making inner items okay, maybe now 'cause there aren't any more new symbols Untab with Shift+Tab And we get back here.

  23. Just to add the MOBILE version of the site at least in Safari, is amazing. Not to hurt anyone's feelings but the last mobile site on the previous forum software was POOP! I know you didn't make it and it's just what is bundled in, so it's nobody's fault really. But the point is this new one is AWESOME!! I mean I couldn't test it thoroughly because the new software refreshed or removed cookies, so since I don't actually remember my password I've only been able to log in on PC because Chrome saved my passwords... hrm someday.. someday I will hit the "Forgot password?" button and see what happens...

  24. It's a nice listen but also strange, because there's so much going on. XD In parts it has an old school vibe, particularly 2:15-2:30. Lovely listen.

  25. Well I mean, leaving all the technical solutions aside, being able to figure out the key of something is a pretty baseline skill you ought to have as a composer/arranger. Like when you listen to a song, can you tell if it's in a major or minor key? Can you figure out the tonic by listening to it? It also helps if you start thinking of melodies and chords not in terms of actual notes, but of scale degrees. So let's say you have this chord progression: C major, A minor, F major, G major. Think of it instead as I, vi, IV, V (1, 6, 4, 5) in the key of C Major. Let's say you have a melody, like the main title theme from Star Wars. That's in Bb Major: Bb, F, Eb D C Bb, F, Eb D C, Bb, F, Eb D Eb C Instead, think of it in terms of where the notes are in the Bb Major scale. Bb is the tonic/root, or 1; F is the dominant, or 5; the other Bb when the melody goes up is the octave so let's say for the sake of this example it's 1+. 1, 5, 4 3 2 1+, 5, 4 3 2 1+, 5, 4 3 4 2 Now that you're thinking of it in terms of scale degrees instead of actual notes, it becomes easier to think about the song in different keys. You're getting into your own head if you think about certain keys as "harder" or "crazier" than others as a composer/arranger. Keys are all relative, and they're only really "harder" if you're an instrumentalist who has some difficulties playing in certain keys because of the physicality required. Next time you listen to a song, like for Castlevania or whatever, sit down and figure out the key just by listening. Find figure out if it's major or minor (if it's CV it's probably minor). Then find the tonic/root. There you are. That's the key.

  26. Reached the 100th mark today (technically, I must be around 105-110 because I reviewed a few ones without updating my sheet)! Hope I can find enough time to make it to 200! It's insane how you can miss some good music and this is a great way to discover cool stuff.

  31. I admit I'd been lurking here for a while, but I finally joined after Heart of a Gamer's release. I listened to the album, and I have two words for you all: HOLY. CRAP. I am hooked like the Balloon Fight Fish. I especially appreciate that one of Iwata-san's lesser-known games (HECK YEAH ROLLERBALL) got some love too. Speaking as a mere fan, but speaking from the heart (required in an Iwata thread) - fantastic job, everyone. This will be a permanent addition to my Nintendo music playlist. #ThankYouIwata <3

  32. Delighted to be a part of this, such an eclectic mix of sounds making a lovely tribute. Would have liked more time to work on the art, but that's always what I say. For such a quick turnaround the mini album has turned out really well. congrats to all the musicians involved, along with the project managers. It's awesome. I'm sure Big S would've loved this. EDIT: Thanks also for putting faith in me as an artist.

  35. Woah, holy delay on the drums. The mix is very right heavy unless I've suddenly gone deaf...nope it's definitely a balance issue. Those strings and horns don't cut well enough for how you're using them. They sound muddy next to the distorted guitars, and that's no good for a lead. The arrangement is pretty good, but it's so cluttered in the low mids! I'd start by carving out some low mids from the strings and horns, and maybe add some more top and bottom overall. I'd like to hear it resubmitted but You've gotta do a bit of cleanup first. NO
