    OCR Secret Santa 2015

These two little figures (not the coffee cup which was bought at a past London Gaming Con) came through the mail today, and they look so adorable! And I was worried that with the lead up to the holiday, the OCR SS would be another delayed asset on top of everything else that had happened in the run-up to this event. Still, I am thankful they both came! Once I do some winter cleaning they'll have a nice, chilled home in my room. I had a look at the gift notes from the package and it also said something about download codes for some of their music. If they're anywhere, they weren't in the box; wonder if they ended up somewhere that I hadn't looked yet. Considering what the SS set out to do, I have a feeling there may be more that had gone under my radar, but we'll see. Nevertheless, thanks so much Garpocalypse!

  3. Transcendental. Wavy and airy at times, rocking at others. It's like you took a really good version of this theme, and THEN said, "Hey, give me the coolest solo guitar work you can imagine over the top of this and never let that solo stop, but also you're never allowed to just play random notes, you need to have a purpose." And the result is this. Wonderful. Made the mix feel like it was 1 minute long, and that's a compliment to it's transportive nature.

  4. if you have reached a prize milestone, just let me know via PM at the end of the month; I can do a quick database verification and then give you all gold stars. I think then we can either have some sort of amazon voucher or something, or we just get your address and mail the prizes out

  6. Compo: MnP (Meat 'n Potatoes) Round 47: FF9 - Zhorn & Thorn Midi: http://compo.thasauce.net/files/materials/MnP47_FF_IX_Zorn_and_Thorn's_Theme_DW.mid Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Y75EjVX8yo Deadline: Jan 5th Tuesday 1PM Vote Ends: Jan 8th Friday midnight Submit your remix Here when completed. **If you have technical difficulty with account activation at ThaSauce, please contact me via PM and I will submit your track and will also tally your vote** MISSION STATEMENT The goal of Compo:MnP is to promote that "meat and potatoes" conservative approach to remixing: this includes the mood and composition of source tunes. It is up to the remixer to create their own personalization, or to simply give it a sound upgrade. Moreover, the compo is a great opportunity to hone your remixing skills and give video game music the respect that is due. SOME reinterpretation is recommended, but not required. MnP Instructions/Guidelines 1. Covers and Sound Upgrades are permitted. 2. Most or all of the source notes must be present (but not necessarily in the exact same order), secondly the mood (energy, pacing, feelings being conveyed etc) should also be retained. For example, a source tune that is fast-paced and energetic that's remixed into a mellow/chill-out theme would be a hard sell. 3. If you decide to do a genre swap (i.e. symphonic to techno), make sure that the conditions of #2 are met. 4. Submissions must be at a maximum of 20mb (keeping in step with ThaSauce's file size max). 5. Only 1 entry per participant. Previous winner cannot participate but can submit a BONUS entry. 6. All competitors and voters must adhere to the rules stated within: Competition Code and Conduct MISC/TIPS - When picking a source tune, make sure it has a MIDI to make ppl's lives easier. - In-game sound FX are permitted, so long as they don't comprise the whole track (i.e. replacing entire MIDI tracks with just sfx)

  7. Hey guys, MindWanderer is starting a nice Castlevania compo à la DarkeSword/FenixDown (Mega Man and Final Fantasy Compos). It's buried under other compos and only 2-3 people already signed up for it. It'd be a shame not to have more contestants, especially seeing the number of people who entered Shariq's MM compos. Signups are closing in early January, so check it out quickly. (@Mods: It's maybe a little spammy, but other compos started recruiting in Community, so I guess it's okay to do the same -- sorry if it's not okay. Plus I'd be a sad panda if no one enters it ;))

  8. I've had this one stuck in my head for over a decade! I spent a day trying to figure out what to pick for the next round and this kept coming up in my head, so it was an easy pick.

  9. Oh I remember this one from the last FF compo, it was my opponents theme. I lost the round, but I never got this tune out of my head for months

  12. man, i want to hop in here and say how much i appreciate the kind words coming from everyone in this thread. thanks for giving me your ears, your time, and your thoughts; they're humbling gifts to receive. and thanks to dave and all of the ocr staff for toiling over this site, to give video game music the platform it truly deserves, as well as the constructive criticism and undue praise you all have given to me over the years. much love everyone, and hope you all have a merry Christmas. - peter/melody

  13. If I had even a shred of musical ability I would sign up myself, but unfortunately I've got nothing there. However, I definitely like MindWanderer's idea for his Castlevania compo. It's got my seal of approval for what that's worth and I hope more people get involved.

  14. Holy moly, those drums are going crazy. The production is on point, letting the melody stand out bright and strong while the drums do their own thing. The trancelike melody doesn't seem to fit quite well with the intenseish background, but the arrangement is more than solid enough to make up for that. this is some sexy af stuff

Ah... I was about to come post something like "my gifts are slated for December 31st to January 22nd, sorry!" post and then that shows up. But... if there's one thing I know about Sentai shows (from the three I've seen), it's that they like cross-overs. ... THAT'S A HINT.

  19. Mid January; gotcha! I'll see what I can come up with *edit* I got off my lazy *** and finally started on my WIP. About 1:30 done so far (not bad for a 27 second source) and good ideas on how to progress.

  20. Everyone said it already but this is pretty good. A somewhat straightforward approach to the song with cool solo-ing on top. I like how the focus seems to be more on the chord progression of the original rather than on the opening notes, it makes it sound refreshing. Guitar playing, as pointed out by everybody above me, is spot on and damn good. If I had to offer some nitpicking, I felt the snare sounded a bit stale sometimes, like if the velocity didn't change much.

  21. I love the guitar work in this track, but I wasn’t too thrilled with some of the percussion work in this. Seemed very distracting, and distorted in an unenjoyable way. If it weren’t for the guitars, I would have stopped listening to this halfway through.

  22. Great rock remix. It’s intense, and action packed. All without relying on super-fast solos and riffs. The synth instruments and the rock instruments do a great job complimenting each other without overpowering one another.

  24. Such a tasteful and respectful handling of the source material, which in my opinion is one of the most beautiful melodies.

  25. SICK guitar playing. Great take on a well-known source. Sounds like an evening in Zeal just sitting on a hill, probably cause the backing is great too. I know nothing about guitar playing, but the improvisation and playing here is just awesome.

  26. Ok, awesome. melody, very well done! This was a pleasure to listen to every second of the way. I'm not intending to pigeon-hole at all, because your playing and tone are all your own, but I get this great vibe of Beck playing through Vai's gear...with Satch-like pinch and tap harmonics. Super expansive, super quacky, super rich. And a tight mix to boot. Repeatin' this for awhile.

  27. Holy shit! melody!!! I'm HUGE fan of all Peter's works and I was extremely glad to see his name of the front page. While this remix is on the rockier side of things, compared to other Peter's songs, it's still a great pleasure to listen to. And though this work is a bit of departure from other melody's stuff in terms of genre, it can be easily recognised as his work due to badass drum groove and wonderful jazzy licks here and there. What a lovely song!

  28. Holy hell. I recognized melody's handle from several other remixes, particularly elegy of the solipsist, but I wasn't prepared at all for the level of excellence in this one. I don't have the musical chops to describe why it's awesome but it's certainly not subtle about it.

  29. Just amazing stuff from melody. Can't gush anymore about it than everyone else has already.

  30. Wow. I can't remember the last time a remix had this much of an impact on me as a listener. This mix ascends to new heights for an artist who has already has an incredible catalog of previous works under his belt. In my opinion, this is melody's magnum opus - a rich, colorful interpretation, skillfully produced, performed, and arranged in a way that perfectly captures the true spirit of an incredible source tune. While the main highlight here is certainly Peter's dynamic, emotive soloing, this is worth another listen or two just to pick out all of the minute details in the backing instrumentation. By the same token, it's also very easy to throw this on repeat, let yourself get lost in the swirling, delay-laden atmosphere and just enjoy the vibe. This is an excellent example of a remix that can resonate with listeners on many different levels. Truly remarkable. (copying my judge decision post here because it functions well as a review, too.)

  31. Oh man, I LOVE that guitar. Smooth af. This is a super creative arrangement, and I really like the chill atmosphere that's somehow created even with that ridiculously sexy electric guitar. This is like a 4 min long really good guitar solo

  32. Yeahhhh, this track! I loved this in the workshop. So much creativity brought to a well-known source that just blows it out of the water. melody has always had a brain for improvisation. I was a fan back when I knew him as xRisingForcex on YouTube... still a fan of him here on OCR as melody.

  33. I loved it When you want a straightforward track with some really outstanding solos, this is the jam. If I had a backing track that good... maybe I could practice... eh

  34. Thank you guys for necroing the thread, but if you really wanna do something cool, let's necro that there album I know I know, I'm supposed to be the cheerleader and keep all the roster of dudes engaged and all that. But.... I dunno if I got the Shia Labeuf in me right now. If you guys wanna send WIPs or even better, WAVs, and people make claims, we can keep this going either until it's done, or we're done, such as with a fork in us.
