  1. If the album ends up late for release, it can be polished a bit and released five years later!

  2. Okay, I'm having somewhat second thoughts. My overly busy schedule has become a bit less busy and a bit more predictable. I'm happy to take the back seat here and give any other takers or leavers priority, but if you're closing signups with an odd number: sign me up with Wicked Child as a source.

  3. 18 will actually work out great! We'll have three brackets with a couple of special rounds. I'll finalize the selections and start putting the brackets together in about half an hour.

  4. For people who were curious about that intro synth, here are some screenies for you. Its all in the effects on this one really. a square wave run through a saw wave and then run through this. The Flanger exaggerates the stereo a little and makes things sound more interesting , but the Auto filter and erosion are what give it the almost voicelike quality. After that its just some saturation to warm it up, and then a sidechain compressor and beat repeat to add a little flair. heres what it sounds like without any fx, then with flanger, and then with the full stack of fx. http://picosong.com/E5Ui

  5. I used this video to find some songs, because I'm know nothing about the Castlevania series. Abandoned Castle Wandering the Crystal Blue Please someone let me know if both of these songs are ineligible and I can look for some more sources. Also, if anyone happens to find midi files of either of these, you'll be my best friend throughout the compo!

  8. General Overview: Going through December Reviews month, I found that the album that contained most of the tracks I reviewed came from this album. So I figured that this album would be worth a download/listen/review. It totally was, as this is by far the most eclectic compilation album anyone can listen to. Nearly every music genre that could possibly be represented is represented in this album. I guess it shouldn't surprise as the Donkey Kong Country soundtrack has always been eclectic, but Overclocked took that about ten steps further with this specific album. It's not perfect, and I don't expect everyone to go through the entire album from beginning and end due lack of preference in other genres. But this is definitely worth investing in for many reasons (if you like DKC series, if you like DKC3, general Overclocked fan, music fan, video game music fan, etc etc etc). I'm an elementary student teacher, and I would totally use this album to help kids discover what music genre's appeal to them, and which ones don't. I also appreciate this album as until last month, I didn't even know that the Game Boy Advance port had unique music. So I had nothing to compare any of the "GBA" tracks to, and I still enjoyed them. It made me more curious about the GBA version of the game. Moral here is, you miss out on a lot of good Overclocked tracks (and albums) if you choose not to download it just because you've never heard the original before. Album Strengths (AKA Personal Favs): Track 1-4: Unbearable (Brothers Bear) by Brandon Strader This was already a fun track, so it's nice to hear Brandon retain that fun factor even while making the track his own. Track 1-6: Purewater Pressure (Stilt Village) by WillRock Very relaxing and light hearted. It just makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Track 1-7: Bash the Bastards! (Bonus Time) by WillRock, Level 99 I was expecting something much more intense with a title like that, but I still enjoyed the relaxing folk rock vibe I got out of this. Track 1-8: Funky's Joint (Hangin' at Funky's) by Brandon Strader Compared to DKC 1 and 2, I didn't really care for Funky's theme in DKC3. But this interpretation of Funky's theme actually makes me appreciate it more. How do I describe this without using any funky puns....damn it. Track 1-13: Banana Revolution (Live in Kongcert) [Cranky’s Showdown] by Jason Covenant feat. AkumajoBelmont Loved the "'live performance" vibe. Almost sounds like this was actually recorded live at a venue of sorts. Track 1-14: Permafrost (Frosty Frolics) by Draconiator, Flexstyle I was still humming this version of Frosty Frolics when I reviewed this last month. It gets stuck in your head quite easily. Lucky for this track, it's a good song to keep in your head. Track 1-18: Shenanigans Bananigans (Jungle Jitter) by Archangel Very creative arrangement. For someone who had never done a "cartoon-chase" style theme at the time this was being produced, you sure made it seem effortless. Track 1-19: Cliffside Clamber (Rockface Rumble) by Ergosonic The percussion made this track a 10, and then the rock guitar at around the 4 minute mark took it to 11. Track 1-20: mojo gogo (Jangle Bells) by prophetik Said it in the original, but I'll repeat it here. Very Motown, very comparable to the Contours, all around excellent arrangement. Track 2-7: Water Warped (Water World) by GSlicer, The Scarborough Joker .ti evoL .dica ni gnimmiws retfa lanimilbus lla tca ot tnaw em sekam kcart sihT Track 2-10: Wrinkly's Nightcap (Wrinkly 64) by Doc Nano This was such a sweet track. Very Claude Debussy-esq. Track 2-11: The Mighty Junglol (Chase) by Jason Covenant I feel like this track was made for the purpose of starting a meme of some sort. But outside of being reminded of YTMND, I did like this track. The narration track reminded me of how narration was delivered in old LucasArts adventure titles. Track 2-16: Friendships Through Dark and Light (Crazy Calypso, Crystal Chasm) by Vampire Hunter Dan This sounds like it would have made the best ending theme to a Donkey Kong Country game ever. Track 3-2: Treehouse Campfire (Treetop Tumble GBA) by Level 99 Wanna go camping in the wilderness? Wanna bring a guitar? Is the weather clear and starry? If you said yes to all three, then this should be the music to represent such a trip. Track 3-4: Thump Brothers (Brothers Bear GBA) by Flexstyle I love this track, and the beat-boxing. But still, it makes me want to hear the damn bears rap about themselves. Track 3-9: Funky's Tricks (Funky's Game GBA) by Malcos I loved the fun electronic/chill vibe this track creates. The beats are fabulous, and the main melody is so soothing. Track 3-11: Arichnophobia (Arich Boss) by Flexstyle feat. Paul Capps When I reviewed this last month, I had to hear the original because if this boss truly did have its own theme, it's gotta sound good, right? All I can say is, I wish that the original...well...GBA original theme sounded half as good as this arrangement does. Track 3-13: Post-Apocalyptic Society (Boss Boogie GBA) by Harjawaldar And then you get this boss battle theme which just sounds like it was made to motivate the bad guys more than the good guys. But that's okay, because it's fun to be bad, and to hear what represents the bad sometimes. Track 3-14: Nutz in the Head (Nuts and Bolts GBA) by zykO I actually liked the weirdness of the track. The distorted drums really added to the track, and really captured that "in the head" feeling. Track 4-1: Undercurrent (Enchanted River GBA) by Pot Hocket This is such a soothing, innocent new age stroll in the water. Very nice. Track 4-3: Heart of the Cave (Cavern Caprice GBA) by Rozovian ....wait, Super Metroid was used in this? Huh, interesting. I guess that makes kind of sense. Still a nice, pretty track. Track 4-7: Spanish Jitters (Jungle Jitter GBA) by David Wise feat. Robin Beanland, OC ReMixers Damn this track is incredible. You really have to hear for yourself how incredible this track is. So much effort from so many people in one track, and it all pays off. It's so good, it made me worry that my experience with the rest of the album would be tainted by comparison XD Track 4-8: Sea Breeze Concerto (Stilt Village GBA) by Monkey Kong feat. David Wise A little bit new age, a little bit rock, a little bit fusion jazz, a little bit 80s pop, a lot of it fun to listen to. Track 4-9: Beneath the Moonlight (Stilt Village GBA) by Theophany feat. Harmony, some1namedjeff, Fishy Back to back Stilt Village? Okay, I'll take it. Very grand arrangement here. I didn't get that "ending theme" vibe from it, but I still got a lot of enjoyment out of it. Track 5-2: Jitterbug System (Jungle Jitter) by Flexstyle I loved the percussion work here. It's so addictive, and catchy. Track 5-4: Treetop Intense (Treetop Tumble) by Danton F. The heavy metal vibe brought into this track works really well. Now I have a second reason to associate "intense" with Treetop Tumble (the first being that saw blade level). Track 5-5: Joyful Jungle Jig (Jungle Jitter) by Chernabogue I'm amazed that I recognized this as being from Chernabogue. Guess that what happens when you go through Vampire Variations in a week. The percussion and flute work done here are so good. The synth melodies make the jungles seem a little twisted. Like you'll lose your mind if you stick around too long. Track 5-7: Canopy Crawl (Jungle Jitter GBA) by Evory feat. Gintokipianist (Man, Jungle Jitter brings out the best in Overclocked, doesn't it?) This track makes me think I'm listening to audio from a silent film. Very fun, and very natural sounding.

  9. First instinct here is that the mixing is a bit off - The drums are completely buried, boost the volume and compress the kick/snare a bit to give them a bit of punch. Sometimes things are too exposed, like that Pulsewave stuff at 1:07. Seems to me like you've got the right idea of where to level things mixing wise because everything that requires the focus is right, its just you've over done it a tad. Also, one or two of the samples aren't great but with better mixing you might be able to make up for some of the sound design flaws. Sometimes the arrangement just... stops. I suggest you either remove them or try to edit them in some way cause atm, it just sounds like the track has stopped, then it starts again! It puts you out of the mood a tad. Also, some of the instrumentation isn't quite fitting with your aesthetic in terms of reverb. The pulsewave for example... no reverb at all. It sticks out in a bad way cause the rest of your track isn't as dry. A lot of critique there for ya, sorry if I seem a tad harsh, it is a good track but it requires quite a bit of work to get it up to OCR level since thats what you're aiming for. Keep working at it

  10. Sources and brackets are finished and in the first post. Please review to make sure your selection is correct and that the timing works for you. Also please note the area title assigned to your source. You'll be using that when you name your remix submission files. Edit: Missed this earlier, somehow: Yeah, that was before I started frequenting these forums, but I did notice that from reading the archives. That's why I'm doing a point-based losers' bracket, so that if someone is too fatigued to continue, their dropping out won't be a free pass for their opponent--and if they want to jump back in later on, they can. That's also why I'm calling the winner of the winners' bracket a tournament victor even if they lose the final round (thus effectively making that round optional for them), but the winner of the losers' bracket has a shot at earning co-winner. Also, since I'd like to make an OCR-I out of this for Castlevania's 30th anniversary, I want to give people who drop out more chances to create something they like well enough to include.

  13. I feel like when I listen to this, I'm listening to how NES games did "spooky" BGMs, outside of the Castlevania series. Which is to say, this sounds like it's trying to have a lot of fun being spooky. The melody gets stuck in your head really easily, and I also enjoyed the melody trade off after the 2:52 mark. Great work.

  14. This is really nice from beginning to end. It's so ethereal electronica, if that's even a suitable way to describe something. The way you arranged everything in the order that you did almost makes me think I'm listening to music from Xenoblade Chronicles. I love it, great work.

  19. So, 2016 is full of Nintendo games celebrating their 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 30th and even 35th years. Seriously, check out the dates. Donkey Kong - 1981 (35th) Metroid - 1986 (30th) The Legend of Zelda - 1986 (30th), Oracle of Seasons/Oracle of Ages - 2001 (15th) and Twilight Princess - 2006 (10th) Kid Icarus - 1986 (30th) Pokémon Red and Green (Blue)- 1996 (20th) and Diamond and Pearl - 2006 (10th) Luigi's Mansion - 2001 (15th) Pikmin - 2001 (15th) Golden Sun - 2001 (15th) Animal Crossing - 2001 (15th) Wii Sports - 2006 (10th) Super Mario RPG - 1996 (20th) Mole Mania - 1996 (20th) Harvest Moon - 1996 (20th) Mario Kart 64 - 1996 (20th) New Super Mario Bros - 2006 (10th) As others have pointed out, it's also the anniversaries of several other video games. NOT JUST NINTENDO! Dragon Quest - 1986 (30th) Crash Bandicoot - 1996 (20th) Sonic The Hedgehog - 1991 (25th) Castlevania - 1986 (30th) Alex Kidd - 1986 (30th) Arkanoid - 1986 (30th) MOTHERFUCKIN' ARKANOID!! Battletoads - 1991 (25th) Spacequest - 1986 (30th) ToeJam and Earl - 1991 (25th) Metal Slug - 1996 (20th) Quake - 1996 (20th) Jak and Daxter - 2001 (15th) Okami - 2006 (10th) HOW OLD DO YOU FEEL NOW? Saints Row - 2006 (10th) Resident Evil - 1996 (20th) Bubsy 3D - 1996 (20th) Tomb Raider - 1996 (20th) And that's just the ones I could think of/look up on Wikipedia. I'm sure there are a few of the more obscure ones, like Japan-only releases. Not to mention the GameCube and the 3DS are also 15 and 5 years old, respectively. Damn, that's a lot of stuff that's getting old. Now I feel old... So, who wants to do 10 remix albums within the next month? Kidding! A lot of these games came out in January or February, so it's too late for any kind of massive project. But we can still show our appreciation for these anniversaries! I'm looking forward to seeing what they will do for Zelda. The new Wii U Zelda, from what we have seen so far, is looking pretty damn good, aesthetically and mechanically. But until it's out, who knows? All I know is that I still love playing Link's Awakening and I'm glad I went to the concerts they've had over the last few years. Pokémon is 20 this year! To celebrate, Nintendo is releasing the original Pokémon games on the 3DS. You can download Red, Blue and Yellow this February 27th. It's almost identical to the original versions, with one exception: it will emulate the link cable system using the 3DS wireless, so you can still trade and battle! Also, comes with a code to download a Mew for your 3DS games! Golden Sun! I never completed the second game, and I missed out on the third one for the DS, but that doesn't change the fact I loved the first game. I'm hoping for something to commemorate the first game this year, even if it's nothing big and fancy. Anyone else a bit excited for what Nintendo is planning for these anniversaries?

  20. Oh yeah! I think this reminded me of this theme. I find the melody to be rather strange sometimes, and though it works, I think it's kind of half-resolving at those times---resolving melodically but not always harmonically. I do really like the choppy processing (like the metallic snare at around 1:04, for instance). The mixing is also very clean for what's going on (and there's a lot going on!). My favorite part is after 2:52 all the way to the end when we have this constant tradeoff of interacting leads (the harmonies also work best there IMO). It does seem to carry on for quite a while after 2:52, but I'd be proud of what's there.

  21. Ungh! The Mario voice samples definitely grab our attention (and seem to be quite divisive) but that's far from all there is to this solid disco house thumper. For my money, the SFX use is really well embedded to the arrangement. Even though the vox samples are pretty much in your face, they work to build the piece and are very well paced, and don't feel like used for their own sake. I can see if you're allergic to sound effect samples it would make you uncomfortable, but I must say I thought I'd heard enough Mario voice samples in arrangements but this doesn't grate me in any way. It's precisely because they're a part of the arrangement and not just pasted on top for laughs. The brilliantly James Brown-esque (indeed!) "Ungh!" is a simple highlight, and the "poing!" combined with the coin sound is delightful. I like the pacing of the beat, the sometime sparsity of the soundscape gives the tune a wide open feel, which is a fun contrast to the humorousness of the vox samples. The instrumentation is a good combo, I like the classic synth tones especially, but the tasteful splashes of delay and the disco borrowings of funk wah and string interjections are very effective too. Great opener for the album.

  25. I agree with what's been said, but honestly, it doesn't really sound like "80s rock" at all. I'm quite familiar with said genre so maybe I can provide at least one point of useful advice. - A defining feature of a lot of 80s music, is gated reverb on the drums. Basically, you run the toms and snare through a HUGE reverb, but use a noise gate or similar device to chop off the sound of the reverb just enough so that it doesn't sound messy. Also, see if you can get a hold of some retro drum machine samples. There is a soundfont out there called "ultimate drums", the "power kit" contained within sounds quite 80s. - Saws - Heavily reverbed chords played by a synth with two detuned saw waves is common. Kinda like what you hear in Van Halen's "Jump" - Electric guitars with lots of delay and chorus - Roland Juno-60 was extremely popular for basslines and the Juno-106 had arguably the quintessential synth brass sound of the 80s. Your bass isn't too far off, though. See if you can emulate or find an emulation of those synths. - Synth bells...synth bells everywhere. Maybe use those in place of the marimba? A recent VGM track that totally nails it, is this That is so fucking 80s, l grew a mullet just listening to it. I think if you follow the others advice and apply some of the concepts like what you hear in this tune to what you already have, you'll be sounding straight out of the "golden age of pornogra-err...music, in no time!

  26. The mixing feels weird; it's like you took something that compositionally sounds like an 80s rock song and applied orchestral-style mixing. As a result, there's some substantial low-mids muddiness, mainly from the piano and pad, like at 0:52 - 0:57, for example. The drums also feel buried under the marimba and piano sometimes (like at 0:06 - 0:34), so they could use some careful compression to make them punchier and more exciting. The drum writing can also be more energetic and less stiff. So, try toning it down on the piano and pad reverb, liven up those drums, and perhaps hone in more on that 80s rock feel that you seem to have accidentally somewhat landed on here.

  27. **FIRST WEEK UPDATE** OK So it's been evidently quiet on the topic thread replies here, but I've been getting a lot of positivity in my PMs. Some claims have been trickling through, namely from Yami and HoboKa at present, and Nitrozsz has very kindly offered his services as an audio aide. There has also been a lot of excitement from other forum members, who are unfortunately too busy with other projects or their own IPs to jump in right now, at least until their own lives are settled. But it seems Terranigma has touched more peeps than I once thought. I won't name them, because it's not fair on them if it turns out they're just too tied up in the future. But what started out as personal worry this album wouldn't happen has become a glimmer of hope and refreshment. I think this album may just be! There's plenty more spaces available. so don't be afraid to PM me or message me in this here thread. Again, If you're not familiar with the game, play it. If you can't play it, listen to the OST in the Youtube link in the OP. It's one of the most haunting and exciting 16-bit OST's I've ever heard. Let's bring these hidden gems of games deservedly into the limelight!

  28. HEY GUYS double post I know but who cares lol ! I've got a big update on the status of the project. As you may know, we have been seeking OCR approval for... quite a while actually. I sent the proposal in LATE MAY and have heard NOTHING from any OCR staffer since. I had sincerely planned to have the logistics of the release figured out by now, but between that mess and communicating with our ONLY artist (who is doing a fantastic job btw), I cannot say for sure if the OCR approval will come soon. I'm going to quote the OP here: So here's the deal. The cover isn't finished (although it almost is), the songs aren't finished (for the most part), and we lack OCR approval. That means I am pushing back the final deadlines for the songs to an undetermined time. There will, however, be a new deadline for an up-to-date WIP on March 1st. If you want to send me what you have now, that would be great, but don't stress over having to finish your ditty in the next month. That said I'm going to post a teaser for the cover art; I hope to have the finished version soon! I know it's a bit dark, but like I said, we're working on it. Good luck to you all, hope to hear from you soon! EDIT: idk how to do spoiler tags in the new format, sorry.

  31. Right from the start the instrumentation in this is amazing. The female 'aaaah' sounds a little stilted at times, though nothing too major. The vocal work overall is excellent and fits the music perfectly, however at times it does seem to dip a little and gets drowned out the slightest bit. As I said before though the instrumentation is amazing; everything fits together perfectly and nothing overrides anything else. Overall a fantastic remix.

  33. This almost doesn’t even sound like a “video game remix.” It sounds like something I would actually hear in a movie, video game, or even on Broadway. I do agree with RiverSound that there could have been a little more reverb and delay. Lovely and haunting arrangement.

  34. Fourthing the criticism that the track relies on the same components for too long, but it wasn't a major problem. It was a fun, spiffy little track to listen to and I really enjoyed the sound design. Obviously we've posted many chippy subs, but this had a different vibe in a way that I can't totally put my finger on, though I'll try. I liked how sparse and straight-ahead it was. Interesting work with the leads to keep them interesting while not taking too much attention from the groove. As mentioned, the combination of sources was well-chosen too. A pass for me. YES

  35. Always enjoy it when an artist does something a bit different and takes some chances. You have a nice clear set of synth and chip sounds here driving the mix, things are clear and audible. There were a few things I thought could've done with improvement. I thought the main hook was used a bit too much throughout the track. There could've been some more variation of that part, or further synth tweaks along the way to make it feel more varied. I found the clap/snare slightly weak compared to the other punchy elements in the mix. A layer with a bit more low end or even a small amount of EQ may have brought its punch out a bit more. The arrangement at times felt a little samey in places, but the appregos were largely responsible for that. Overall I'm ok with this one. YES

  36. Weird, lo-fi, chipfunk, syncopated groove...such a strange vibe, almost feels like video game music from a completely different game at times I highlighted the two criticisms Kris made that I agree with, above... texturally, you need to watch out for self-similarity a bit within each mix... it's such a distinct sound/aesthetic, which is great, but if you ride those accompanying arpeggios and repeat that synth lead a couple times, it starts sounding "too much like itself" - hopefully that makes sense Getting a little more minimal with subtractive breakdowns, and (especially) working more with dynamic, shifting panning & DSP could help with this. It's not a deal-breaker, it's just something you can consider to improve each piece. Dig the overall vibe, dig the combination of themes. YES
    1 point
  37. Kudos on combining these two sources quite seamlessly, I especially like how you combined them together starting at 2:54, it works well. There is quite a bit of personalization on these melodies, but I always hear them. The only part I can't quite give credit for is the chip arp which you say is playing the descending string pattern from Lulu, I think that's a bit of a stretch. Other than that, I'm good with source use. You've used quite a few crunchy timbres in the track, but I'm finding everything audible and well mixed. I like the leads, they are expressive and you've done some tasteful panning. I really like the writing and sound choices. My big gripes here are that the drums get repetitive and so does the backing arp, giving the track a samey feel overall, but I'm not finding this to be a dealbreaker. Another big gripe, the ending is a letdown, it just stops. Other than those things, the arrangement is good, mixing is getting the job done, bass is clear, everything is distinct. Cool track, nice work. YES

  38. Already commented on this in my album review, but it really does have a relaxing atmosphere and orchestration to go with the sad melody. Vocals could have benefited from a little more reverb&delay. Especially the female aah's sound a tad dry but it's no biggie; It's a nice song worth checking out.
    1 point
  39. Somber and sad, but it does have a hopeful and meaningful message in the lyrics. Really sounds gorgeous for that very reason, along with the instrument choices. You guys' vocals sounded pretty good as well, bringing that emotion out of the ReMix. All in all, sounds great to me.
