  1. Welcome to the Album Thread for Final Fantasy VIII: Collision Course. The concept for this album stretches back to 2010 where a tracklisting and title were chosen for what one would have dreamed would be a great Final Fantasy VIII album. With your help, I'm hoping to make that a reality. Right now is the recruitment phase, so if you are a posted ReMixer, feel free to make a claim -- first come, first served on any source. If you are not a posted ReMixer, you are still welcome to join the album roster if you can produce high quality mixes, or are capable of producing a high quality arrangement and structure, then delivering your stems for mixing/mastering. Please submit an audition. Mixing/Mastering would be handled by me for anyone who requests it. There is no genre restriction, however please give much consideration to preserving the spirit of the source. tldr: first come, first served for posted remixers other artists, please submit an audition! mixing/mastering available on request if it's an emotional piano source, I reserve the right to bounce back your gangsta dubstep screamo mix Also if you're going to claim something like The Extreme, keep in mind it's gotta be excelsior TRACKLIST ReMixer Works in Progress posted here First Half Liberi Fatali (claimed by HeavenWraith) Balamb Garden (claimed by Chernabogue, Tuberz McGee, Furilas) Blue Fields (claimed by Chris Porter) Don't Be Afraid (claimed by Tuberz McGee) Find Your Way (claimed by Wiesty) The Landing (claimed by Sagnewshreds) SeeD (claimed by Manji) Breezy (claimed by RiverSound) Force Your Way (claimed by Ivan Hakštok) Waltz For The Moon (claimed by XPRTNovice) The Man with the Machine Gun (claimed by Gario) Julia (claimed by Geoffrey Taucer) Roses and Wine (claimed by Brandon Strader) Junction (claimed by DjjD) The Mission (claimed by jnWake) Only A Plank Between One and Perdition (claimed by shadowpsyc) Slide Show Pt. 2 (claimed by bluelighter) The Stage is Set (claimed by Larsec) Movin' (claimed by fxsnowy) Martial Law (claimed by JJT) Succession of Witches (claimed by Vled Tapas ft. 4. Ok, it's a pretty iconic track! Maybe you and Tuberz could collab on the arrangement too? I'll mark you guys down for it! Interested to hear how you 3 would handle it! Thank you very much. Yes you can grab The Landing! Prioritize FF3 though. And I'd love to mix and master your stems, that'd be hot. Dunno if people are skimming the first half and claiming and neglecting the second half list, but there's KICKARSE stuff in the second half...

  5. Alright, put me down for "Balamb Garden". Expect some soft rock featuring Tuberz and Furilas ^^

  7. Sweet! Mostly posting here to express interest, no claim yet. Hope I can do a quick relisten of the OST and post a claim this weekend. Let's see if there's anything from the second half that stands out to me

  8. Whooooaaaa this is super exciting! I've been waiting for an FF8 album to come out of OCR for a while now. Brandon, you're constantly doing new album projects. What a bad ass. I know I haven't had anything posted to the main OCR page yet. Hopefully that will change with my next DoD entry which is sounding way better than the other stuff I've done so far. But I'm doing a track for the FF3 album (I just got back from traveling for work this week too so I've been working on an arrangement that I hope will kick ass). Would it be possible for me to claim The Landing? I've actually kind of been working on an arrangement of that for a couple of months now but haven't had a reason to move forward with it yet. Again, I'm totally find with submitting my stems for mixing/mastering. Not sure I'd be able to throw a solid audition of this particular arrangement down before MAGFest though. For the next two weeks I want to focus on the track I'm doing for FF3 and my MAGFest DoD entry. But I'd be honored to take on a track for this album. I'm also up for laying down some guitars for anyone else's remix or collaborating in general.

  9. I'll finish my batch soon, sorry for the wait...I had a bunch of things happen (web commission started + new job + really sick over Christmas) and I'm now just getting back into the groove of things.

  13. I'm making a claim for Man with the Machine Gun. FFVIII arguably has the best soundtrack in the series, so if I finish this one in a timely manner I may do more. Let's do this.

  15. 1001 Knights is an art anthology project focusing on creating people-positive characters with feminist overtones, created by Annie Stoll and Kevin Jay Stanton. Kickstarter: bit.ly/1001Knights Official Site: onethousandandoneknights.com Twitter: twitter.com/1001_Knights Facebook: www.facebook.com/OneThousandAndOneKnights Track Artwork: Annie Stoll (twitter.com/aniistoll) & Kevin Jay Stanton (twitter.com/kevinjaystanton) Annie is a friend of mine that I met at ConnectiCon a few years ago. I was there for OC ReMix and she was our table neighbor, promoting her webcomic, Ode. While planning the Kickstarter campaign for 1001 Knights, she put out a call for a musician to do trailer music. I volunteered, and was immediately impressed with the incredible artwork being produced for the anthology. Annie asked me to put together a piece of music that felt mysterious and important, with fantasy and fairy tale overtones. I wrote a piece called "Gather Your Courage," which would serve as the main theme of the 1001 Knights project. Annie, Kevin, and I were all pretty happy with this piece for the Kickstarter trailer, and everything seemed set. I loved what I'd written in "Gather Your Courage" so much that I felt like experimenting on my own. I decided to arrange my own piece in 6/8 time, and ended up writing this piece, "The Winter March," a heavier, more militaristic arrangement. I sent it over to Annie and Kevin, and they loved it so much that, eventually, we decided to use it for the trailer instead. "Gather Your Courage" is still the main theme of the 1001 Knights project, and I'll be posting it in the coming weeks. I'm also planning on releasing a small EP for purchase including these two tracks (along with a few more original pieces), which is why this track is streaming-only. But for now, please enjoy "The Winter March," and be sure to head on over to Kickstarter and back the project!

  16. Terrific, thank you! It's working nicely for me. Force-reloading fixed the smushed controls and I see you also fixed the I-beam mouse pointers which I'd been going to report.

  17. How about a remix of Mods de Chocobo by all the forum moderators.

  18. Something is very wrong with this post, here... Y'know, Liberi Fatali is a very crucial track for the album. I think making it into a super collab centerpiece for the album would be a very good idea (something like Black Metamorphosis for the FFVII album years back). I may regret it later, but I'd be super on board with helping on a collaboration of that nature for that track, Heaven permitting.

  20. Really tempted to do Eyes On Me, but without any scratch track yet it's hard to start searching a (female) singer. So let's claim on Fragments of Memories in stead. Nice to do a slower, sad, reminiscent song with teh feelz again

  21. I'd like "Junction" if it's still available.

  22. Ok, here's an update: https://app.box.com/s/f2wfwuduknmzond2oj6czgayszzxe2wh - Narrowed the piano a bit - Slightly reduced the reverb of the piano - Less reverb on the bass - Snare should be louder now - Moved some of the bass notes upwards (2:13) Didn't change the kick yet.

  23. Making mistakes in my DAW often gives me fresh ideas. Well first of all, if by "pro," you mean me, then look no further than the critique I got on my most recent remix: Anyways, here's my sins laid out for all to see. I have two suggestions for new composers - Study and dissect midi renditions of songs you like in your DAW to see how they work and why, and try writing some songs for piano because it's simpler.

  24. I will admit 1 thing though the 2nd half for sure has a lot more sources I'd refer to as "brutal", but it has a couple really awesome atmospheric/avant-garde potential in "Silence and Motion", "Compression of Time", "Trust Me"... I personally have a lot of interest in the 2nd half, but I think djp claimed the only really uplifting source -- outside of Ride On, the airship theme. YESS You owe me Many-A-Thing, Many-A Very-Secret-Unmentionable! Thank you! I will mark you down!

  25. Bro. I am so down for Don't Be Afraid. Drop A riffage up in this motherload. I've been jamming on ideas all day. I'll shoot you a WIP as soon as I get the time, but I have so many cool groovy 5/4 riffs to lay down on you. <3 xoxo

  26. I need to listen to those tracks before choosing. I'm not familiar with FFVIII but I'm sure there's some cool music to be remixed!

  27. Force Your Way is mine. I actually had a WIP for it since I started working on it ages ago, but it's not up to my current standards so I'll be doing it from scratch.

  28. My Round 4 remix for the SFRG compo. Basically, choirs+orch+large beat as the main formula. I was thinking more solo vox and no guitar.

  32. I could pick up some guitar players (probably Brostok haha) if I write something with guitars, but I'll see what I come up with first

  33. Actually, if it interests you, I could claim the track The Mission, which isn't on the list. It's quite cool Also, someone (Jordanius *cough*) should do The Winner.

  36. Awesome! I'm not sure if I want to claim anything yet but I wish you luck with this. VIII has some damn good songs. EDIT: Rexy should claim Find Your Way and write an awesome piano piece for that .

  37. This thread seems like it's got a lot more potential, if there were more people that contributed. I doubt it's /that/ popular of a subject, but then again I'm one of those weird guys who's into the gritty details of theory and comp. If anyone else wants to bring this thread back to life, I think it could be a fun general hangout for some of us music nerds, studying comp and sound design of vidya music. Props to OP as well; I'd never heard the Silver Surfer OST before today. I am a changed man.

  38. I'd recommend hitting up Rexy. She's basically OCR's star pianist.

  39. @The boojum Agreed on all counts; this was deferred to be part of the next major site design update, but it should have simply been backported/implemented in the current design, given the delays. I'll be working on it now.

  40. I think this is a really lovely little arrangment. Love the integration of both themes Something about changing the timing and tempo brings out something really pretty in the songs I wouldn't have suspected.

  41. It helps to mimic instruments, melodies, harmonies and rhythms from the original piece. It gives you more material to use, more traits of the original and is incredibly helpful for ear-training and instrument-skill.

  42. Can you put me down for "Keeps Us On The Move"? It will probably end up as an EDM remix that's pretty faithful to the source, probably with vocals. I was also contemplating a "Tricky Maze" + "Chased by a Rock" mashup but I think I'd rather start with the Egg Carrier source.

  43. Failure is not writing "bad music". Failure is not writing music at all. If you don't like something, just remember its music, music is subjective. and someone somewhere will adore it. Being a composer means writing things you won't necessarily enjoy or like... hell you might not see any merit in it at all. Having a career as a composer is about keeping someone else happy, not yourself. Sometimes that means writing something in your own style, but usually you gotta fit to your brief. Besides, sometimes a mediocre idea can turn into something incredible if you just keep at it. Never give up, never scrap an idea if you can help it. You never know what you'll end up with, or what may happen.
